Comma Rules — There are many!
Let's talk about FANBOYS today. Have you heard of it? Some of us learned this in school.
It's an acronymn: F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. It stands for 'For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.' These are known as coordinating conjunctions.
One of the first rules to remember is to use a comma before coordinating conjunctions, but ONLY if they are between two independent clauses. An independent clause is one that can stand alone as a sentence.
—I am going to the grocery store, but I'm going to eat dinner first.
—We are going to visit my parents on Christmas day, and we will see my grandparents while we are there.
[[EXTRA Tipsy Today Tip: The word 'because' is NOT a coordinating conjunction. You don’t automatically put a comma before the word because, but sometimes you need a comma there to make sure your meaning is clear. - See more at: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/when-to-use-a-comma-before-because#sthash.LzYbLvV6.dpuf]]
