PROOFREADER, COPY/LINE EDITOR, CONTENT EDITOR
A PROOFREADER is someone who will read your manuscript after it has gone through a copy/line edit. They will look for anything a copy editor might have missed—misspelled words, missing quotation marks, missing words. These are things that can be easily missed by a line editor while they are focusing on all things grammar and punctuation and should be your final step prior to publishing.
COPY / LINE EDITOR (in-line editing) extensively streamlines your story for grammar. We focus on paragraph and sentence structure, word choice, dialogue, and consistency of tone. The line edit also includes copy editing (attention to grammar, punctuation, formatting, and consistency in names, dates, and other plot elements and flow.) Copy editors should have an excellent sense of proper English. For example, correct spelling errors, fix punctuation mistakes, point out inconsistent tense of verbs, correct grammar errors, whether you've used the word "lay" or laid" properly, etc. A good copy editor will see if your sentence structures are overly complicated or if your paragraphs are too long.
*Copy/line editing is DIFFERENT from content editing and proofreading.*
A CONTENT EDITOR will tell you if your writing has issues such as: point of view errors, weak characters, too many characters, a credible or exciting plot, a need for more emotion in scenes, a need for more description, a strong opening or a weak ending, and much more. A content editor is someone you should hire prior to sending your manuscript to a copy editor.
You should hire a copy editor for line editing of your work prior to publishing. All writers can benefit from line editing, and it’s especially important before you submit to agents or self-publish.
Steps to finalizing your manuscript:
1) Content Editing
2) Copy / Line Editing
3) Final Proofread
